Rialto Bridge
Located in the heart of the city, it was built to cross the Grand Canal, the most important artery of Venice, in what was, and is, the commercial district.
It has always been the symbol of the trading and business of the oldest and most active area of the city, enlivened by the crowded docks and the picturesque markets that, today as then, flank the Canal. The bridge has a single arch, the span of which measures well over twenty-eight meters and carries two rows of shops which are connected to each other, in the centre, by two arches so that the entire length of the bridge is divided into three parts.
The Rialto Bridge has been a busy part of the city for centuries. At any time of the day you can see crowds of people crossing it, rummaging through souvenirs or taking a little rest to observe the incessant activity of the Grand Canal from its balustrades.
